Ewarts Petrol Tap - Viton O Ring Conversion Kit
Ewarts Petrol Tap - Viton O Ring
Conversion Kit for
Austin Sevens etc & Vintage Motorcycles
8 'O' Rings Supplied - Enough for one push/pull main and reserve tap or two taps without reserve facility.
Viton is a high-performance long-life material for use in petroleum environments.
This conversion is simplicity itself. The tap itself does not usually need to be removed. Just remove the opening pull parts as shown in the images. This is done by removing the small side screw retaining each one.
Use 4 rings each side to replace the original cork seals. Screwing the seal shaft in/out adjusts the effective diameter of the rings and therefore allows you to adjust the fit, sealing and tightness of each seal/tap. This allows for any wear in the tap and/or slight reaming of the bore.
Please note that some Ewarts petrol taps on old motorcycles do not allow the shaft to be unscrewed to remove the corks...but instead, the end has to be unrivetted. This 'O' ring conversion is NOT suitable for this type of tap... due to the inability to adjust the effective diameter of the rings by screwing the shaft in or out.
In some cases where the petrol tap is locally fairly worn from the cork seals, it may be beneficial to firstly lightly ream out the tubular aperture of the tap with an adjustable reamer to return to a constant diameter.
Please note that these seals are for petrol taps with a 3/8" bore on the push/pull parts of the tap (they are not for the less common larger 1/2" ones). The 3/8" bore size is as fitted to Austin Sevens and many vintage motorbicycles (but see note in red above).
